Conservation in Sonora
Rancho Bufo Alvarius is the conservation arm of Sacred Heart Sonora. We are not only practitioners — we are creators of medicine. We have bred toads, protected their environment, and witnessed successful procreation season after season. Each female can lay up to 8,000 eggs, and by safeguarding early life stages, the number of surviving toads can increase dramatically each year. Because toads must mature for approximately three years before their secretion can be responsibly collected, this is not quick work — it is a long-term commitment rooted in patience and responsibility.
Our work focuses on habitat restoration, ethical breeding, and long-term protection of Bufo Alvarius. Located in Magdalena de Kino, Sonora, Rancho Bufo Alvarius has been actively dedicated to conservation since 2019 and includes two specialized breeding pools supporting reproduction and survival.
At a time when this medicine is rapidly growing in popularity, very little conservation is actually taking place. Much of what is being sold and consumed is traded without transparency — and many practitioners offering this medicine have never even seen the animal it comes from, let alone understand its habitat, its lifecycle, or the responsibility required to protect it.
We believe that if people wish to work with this medicine, they must also honor its source. We ask all who feel called to Bufo alvarius to be responsible — to support ethical practices, transparent stewardship, and conservation efforts that ensure this sacred substance remains protected for future generations.
